Welcome to the site. – Matt, in the launch position, the bat-head is behind the batter’s head. If the bat-head was first accelerated “in a positive direction (toward the ball), it bang into the batter’s head. Therefore, it must first arc rearward toward the lag position before arcing around “in a positive direction (toward the ball).”
