Opening up

I have been teaching my 9 year old son rotational hitting. He's a very strong power hitter, but a little inconsistent. His coach has begun admonishing him not to open up his front side so early. He tells him to point his front shoulder at the ball until the last split second. What the coach sees as "pulling out", I see as good shoulder rotation. My poor son, who is unusually coachable and conscientious, is caught in the middle, trying to please me and his coach. What would you do in my position? How do you know if a kid is rotating his shoulders too soon or too much. Thank you in advance for your replies.
