Andy,
back in the 80's and early 90's the swing that was taught was at the high school, college, and professional levels was swing slightly down to the ball. I played professional baseball and I have had 4 batting titles throughout my career. I have played with a lot of big time players and they were taught the same. The swing today and how to achieve a high level swing is so advanced with VCR's, slow motion analysis, and gurus like Jack Mankin and Paul Nyman to help educate us on the subject. I can't believe that you are saying that this device ruined your swing . This sounds like to me an excuse for your lack of skill or real lack of understanding of what it takes to be a professional in this business.
