Some young kids have a tendency to "step in the bucket". I have used this method to teach kids to stride toward the pitcher or plate. If they start with their foot "in the bucket" they can only go one way which is toward the plate or pitcher.
I see it as a personal style. I was watching the Women's NCAA softball playoofs and the #3 hitter for Cal actually lined up before every pitch in a bunting position and rotated back to a normal stance.
She was one of the very few rotational hitters. Most of the hitters were linear slap hitters. Their main goal was to hit ground balls to the opposite field.
