Some young kids have a tendency to "step in the bucket". I have used this method to teach kids to stride toward the pitcher or plate. If they start with their foot "in the bucket" they can only go one way which is toward the plate or pitcher.

I guess I didn't see the same games as you but what I saw was alot rotational swinging and going for the fences (check # of home runs this series as to last year) unless there was a runner on second then the short game was played. College softball has really changed in the last two years.
