contact with outside pitch

I would like to hear everyone's comments on where to make contact on the outside pitch? I have had an on going discussion about this with my daughter's head coach.
Also if practicing off a tee, where would you lineup your players to practice this? He has the players lineup with the ball starting at their belly-button and then striding to hit it and this seems wrong to me to make contact at your back hip or close to it.
