Swinging the bat from a position resting on the shoulder.

A local High School coach in Virginia is teaching his softball girls to swing the bat from the shoulder. The bat is placed on the rear shoulder, knob of the bat facing out and the player must swing from that point. The coach advocates this is the only way to properly swing the bat and is upset that local Little League coaches are not teaching the rec. league girls to swing this way. This coach doesn't want the girls playing on his team to play rec. league ball because the rec. leagues are not teaching the way he wants it done. I'm all for changing my old ways but I can't find any information that this style of batting works. Is there anyone that can shed some light on this style of batting.
