"Necessity" of Heavy Bag

How essential is the swinging-into-the-heavy bag drill for somebody who is trying to master these (ie, Jack's) swing mechanics?

Is it absolutely necessary?

Can somebody realistically master this swing without the heavy bag (or tire) drill?

Very curious.
