An interesting thing to do to start to answer or refine your questions is to look at simulations. here are a few that can help you get a feel for the possibilities:

thuis is a simple double pendulum simulation where the central/proximal/first pendulum would be analagous to the lead arm connected tightly to a turning torso mass and the second/distal/peripheral pendulum woud be the bat connected by a passive hinge analagous to the wrist.

This simulation lets you trace the path of the bathead and change the mass and length of the levers/pendula.

here are some simulations by Nyman which resemble a hitter more.

These are very good simulations, but his interpretations and applications derived fromt them are lacking:
