"Why do they teach youngsters to hold hands high above the shoulder"

Posted by: Brenden () on Mon Jun 9 21:12:56 2008

I took my son to a hitting coach who told my son to hold bat at just above shoulder level. I noticed most of the little leaguers in our area hold their hands high in the stance and most of the good ones hold their hands above the shoulder at the loaded up position. When I watch video of the classic hitters "Williams, Ruth, Dimaggio", I notice their hands are very low before loading up and come to about arm pit height or just shoulder height not above. My question is "Why does it seem to be little league coaching orthodoxy to hold hands high up almost to ear level"? Maybe this is just particular to my Houston area.
