Therefore, the batter does not actually need to grip (close the hand tightly) with the top-hand. Thumb base is very low on the thumb into what you might consider outer palm - in my hand about 2 inches away from the middle of the palm. Orienting the top hand such that this thumb base curls around the handle, I find this can be a good source of primary pressure. Fingers assist and add stability.
