videoanalysis checklist organized by phase

Posted by: tom.guerry (tom.guerry@kp.org) on Wed Nov 5 08:49:20 2003

After discussions such as the ones going on here,I have found that organizing video analysis by phase is a useful way to keep track of the incredible amount and complexity (?wealth) of data (trying to be knowledge which hopes to be applied with wisdom).Having an explicit approach can help with communication. The key phases commensurate overall with Jack's mechanical descriptions and Hodges biomechanical sequence/synchronization) I see are:

1-hip cock, (bat cocks)

2-scap load (Nyman),(bat finishes cocking)

3-slotting the back elbow,(beginning of prelaunch tht,bat uncocks)

4- drop and tilt (Epstein)(more prelaunch tht,bat uncocks more)

5-launch,approach,contact,followthrough(things happening pretty fast here with vanishing ability to adjust as pointed out by Jack).(Launch defined as when handpath gets started per Jack).

A starter list of "observations"/"ideals"/"flaws" as well as some "inferences" :

1-hip cock

Is the hip cocked, preceded by some inward turn of the whole body/bend at waist ?

Is the bat cocked by internal rotation of back arm synchronized with internal rotation of lead leg(leading with heel, showing sole?) ?

Is the back hip "stable" is "sway" absent ?

Does weight appear to be carried on the inside of the back foot ?

etc.

2-scap load

Does the hip stay cocked ?

Does the bat cock more by scap load/pinching of back scap rather than wrapping using small muscles ?

Is back scap pinching synchronized with abduction of the lead leg ?

Are you sitting to hit (posture adjustment possible to match plane as recognized)?

Is center of gravity staying on line/moving smoothly forward ? How is back leg accomplishing this ?

Does the torso counterrotate some as the lower body stretches open without excessive shoulder counter rotation ? (are you "winding the rubber band" as the scap loads ?)

Is the bat "centered" ?

etc.

3-slotting the back elbow

Does the hip stay cocked ?

Are you still sitting ?

Does the back scap stay loaded ?

Does the elbow come down to the slot primarily via external rotation of the back arm synchronized with external rotation of the lead leg ?

Is there prelaunch tht, uncocking of the bat ?

Is the front foot open landing on the toe at toe touch ?

Is the weight slightly forward at toe touch ?Is the upper spine starting to arch (top down)?

Is the head staying back so axis is not positive ?

I lead elbow starting to internally rotate/work-up a little ?

etc.

4- drop and tilt

Does hip uncock ?

Is center of gravity between midpoint between feet and weight bearing portion of front foot ?

Is back elbow approaching slot ?

Is back scap still loaded ?

Is lead arm internally rotated/elbow working up ?

Is top hand staying back and up relative to back shoulder ?

Is excessive shoulder counter rotation absent ?

Is prelaunch tht/uncocking accelerating ?

(Insert all details of Epstein's "drop and tilt" here)

etc.

5-Launch,approach,contact,followthrough

Out of time now, insert your checkpoints here
