I find it difficult to believe that your nine year old son could totally change his style of hitting in one night and find instantaneous success. Sounds to me like it is more of a mental thing than anything else. Trying something new with mechanics always gives a player a new sense of confidence at first.

You are right, it was mental in the sense that he was determined to learn and execute rotational principles. I saw firsthand the results, and I suppose that since I was the one who saw him (besides his coach ,teammates and other parents) I would be in the best position to evaluate his performance. I suspect that you may be new to this. Take my word for it, rotation is the way to go!
