In amateurs I see a lot of lunging, but not many that I could say are over rotating. The young kids lunge and their hands are actually going with them, but being left in a postion of no strength. If a kid were to stay balanced and have good hip and shoulder rotation, the only way his hands should be dragging behind would be if he is weak.
