Q: "What do you see the hands/arms doing (above what I described) that adds to generating bat speed?"

A: Moving quickly

Q: "Do you think that the need for shoulder rotation is also overstated & what do you see generating shoulder rotation?"

A: Shoulder rotation "speed" or "quickness" is important only to the extent that it (shoulder rotation) does not impede the "speed" or "quickness" of the arms/hands. Degree of shoulder rotation is what is important and the same could be said of hip rotation.
