Hi Gusto,
It's a common problem, and a bad power leak. The concept he has to understand is as the rear hip starts to rotate, the bat-head starts moving backwards. I'd have him practice that move, stride and start to rotate the lower half while using his wrists, forearms and hands to bring the bat from the cocked position toward the catcher and around in plane. Not full swings at first, just over and over with a speed stick or light bat. Then with a tee, do that move several times then hit the ball. Same with flips, etc. It will take hundreds of reps before it's engrained.
