I coached my daughter's softball team from 10U through 18, teaching mechanics I found on this site in about 2003. I "retired" from coaching when my daughter went into 18 Gold and now she's a college ballplayer.

This summer I was asked to coach a 23U team, made up of returning college players. The team was assembled from the best kids I'd coached, and coached against for almost ten years. What fun!

It was extremely depressing, however, to see what havoc some of these kids' college coaches had wreaked upon their swings with linear-based hitting styles. One kid, a truly great hitter, had transferred from the first college she attended after a miserable freshman year, and told me it took her a full year to feel comfortable at the plate after the "corrections" that had been forced upon her by first college coach, including major D-1 coaches who undoubtedly fancy themselves to be "experts".

I couldn't agree with you more, Jack, that these kids getting conflicting advise from various coaches need to be shown VIDEO OF THE GREAT HITTERS. I have told my 23U players that I have a simple theory of hitting: The players doing it better than anyone else are the ones doing it "right". I tell them that I am happy to share my opinion as to what four or five (or six) things every great hitter has in common with every other great hitter, and then suggest that they go home, punch in the names of some great hitters on YOUTUBE, bring up video and see if they agree with me!

College coaches, of course, expect their "coaching" to be observed without question, which makes it tough on the players.
