I hear a lot about how a short, compact swing is good and a long swing is bad, but I have yet to hear a good description of a short or long swing. Can someone tell me what makes a swing long or short?

That is the answer. That is not a pro and con. That is the difference between a short and long swing. Are you rotating to the ball or pulling your arms forward. Does your rear shoulder go to the ball. Does your lead shoulder pull back to the catcher. Is the axis of your rotation maintained throughout the swing? Or do you drift?
