A Lesson with Jack Mankin
I was in Southern California last weekend and decided to look up John Elliot, a former pro who Jack mentioned as a teacher who taught what Jack teaches. John graciously invited me over to his batting cages where he was giving a lesson to a very talented 16 year old. A little while later who walked in but Jack Mankin. During the course of the next two hours I confirmed in my own mind that Jack and John are undoubtedly teaching the mechanics that Barry Bonds and other great hitters use. After Jack had left, John indicated to me that Jack knew more about hitting than anyone he had ever met. The most telling demonstration was the contrast between the very athletic and strong 16 year old and John Elliot: The 16 year old was swinging with great effort and intention and the bag was exploding. However, the bat-speed meter read 75-78 MPH. John took a few very “quiet” swings, adding a little top hand torque and back shoulder pull. The swings looked quick but did not appear to my eye to be generating great bat-speed. However, the bat-speed readings were 82,85,88,90.
This session also confirmed to me that as is usually the case, the devil is in the details and a picture is worth a thousand words. Also, that it takes time, effort and appropriate drills to develop new muscle memory. Jack indicated his new video will be ready this month. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
Thanks Jack! I appreciated the opportunity to meet you and also appreciate you taking the time to review and comment on the videos of my son’s swing.
Nick
