Dave,

How well is your kid seeing the ball? Is he seeing the ball as long as he can? Shutting the eyes off and leaking with the head (face) toward the field through contact is one cause of the barrel striking the ball to low.

You can also have him shift his batspeed from the start of the swing to more out in the hitting zone. Have him swing and make the swoosh sound out front where contact should be rather than behind himself.
