Joe,
I see where you are coming from about the batting averages. But you need to measure sometihng. For everytime the ball isn't caught it's scored as a hit which improves your average, unless it's an error or a sacrifice. But no one ever said average had anything to do with it. How about trying to hit a small round ball with a round bat, not to mention you have a FRACTION of a second to hit the ball. From home plate to to the pitchers mound is roughly 60 feet (Give or take a few). Think of Randy Johnson pitching. By the time he winds up and releases the ball, his arm is fully extended making that 60 feet more like 50. Now with that in mind, picture it coming in at speeds in excess of 90 mph. You do the math. Find me another sport with such little time to hit something that is so small with an object that is roughly the same shape. Then I will stop saying that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do.
