On the chop swing, I would suggest focus on rotational movement vs back to front movement, and the concept of "tilt"---agling the shoulders down to the point of contact, then extending after the point of contact. Also, don't let the ball travel too deep into the strike zone...and don't set the tee too far back. He should be hitting the ball slightly forward of the front foot.
