"Pulling off the Ball"
I've googled some past threads about this issue, and all good stuff, but let me dial in my son's specifics (12yrs old). He swings the big barrel in tunnel BP fairley well batting right. Switches to lefty and hits well. Then he goes back righty (natural side) and starts swinging a new little league bat. It is stinging his hands pretty badly. I catch a glimpse one contact pretty good in one swing...it's a ball up the end of the barrel. The hit, in the tunnel, is something that would be a low liner halfway to SS position that would be going up to the left side of 2nd base bag, but a SS would probably get (travel ball, LL would probably make it through). He did this multiple times and rarely squared up the ball.
I told him he was pulling off the ball and to hit it up the middle, but it didn't seem to help much.
I'm torn between 3 things)
1) He was tired and he just premeturely finished his swing with his lead shoulder
2) He did so well the first round, he wanted to crush it even harder and thus started to mis-time the ball
3) The big barrel composite was more forgiving than the skinny barrel aluminum and he was pulling off the whole time.
(both bats same size and drop). Big barrel Omaha, Last year's model H2 aluminum w/composite handle.
he didn't roll over on the ball. Nor foul balls. Some hits would be flare outs to right side, mostly hand stingers to left middle of field or grounder into L screen.
I think it could be a combination of the 3, but would like to see if anything I posted registered with any folks on here. I'm hesitant to change or adjust anything given how well the first round went. Maybe make him start off with the H2 next time and see what happens...
