Lag Position

There have been some comments on "lag position" and what is being referred to. A good reference picture is in the Science of Hitting by Ted Williams, page 38: "Hands already past the plate, well in front". The bat at this point is clearly lagging.
I think the reference to lag position comes from golf where it is well understood that good golfers delay the release of their hands until late in the swing, while poor golfers release the angle early.
I must say that I am confused by this particular issue and would appreciate your commnets.
