The inward knee (see B.J. Upton Tampa Bay Devil Rays) and shoulder turn (see Manny Ramirez) is a slight backward and or twisting movement which allows the hitter to gather strength. Its effect is to coil the body in order to launch the swing.

This process can also be initiated by a slight (see David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez) or dramatic (see Alfonso Soriano) lifting of the front leg which starts the process from a prelaunch batting position.
