How does a wide stance help contact even though it slows the bat (like Tony Gwynn or Nomar Garciaparra)?

Am not sure of the answer except possibly to maintain stability of the head during the swing. All great athletes have "quiet heads" during a swing, shot (golf, basketball, etc.). Coaches don't teach enough about balance. If the eyes are moving just a matter of inches, then the ball is moving around even more so according to the batter's brain. I have my kids take a stance on a 2X4 and swing. We bunt and have them hit balls in the cage off a 2X4....this is a great drill. for the golf game too.
