Mabey Scott B can help explain why RM works, I can only give you my experience. Both of my kids we dead pull hitters (left field) before RM and when they started using RM they began to hit the ball to all fields. Based on this I'd say the bat must spend more time in the zone because they are hitting it in more locations than before.

One other side benefit I've noticed with RM is when the batter doesn't hit the ball squarely. My kids have gotten more of these weak liners that drop in for hits (just over the infielders heads) when they don't get all of the ball. Again mabey the bat actually stays more in the zone.
