A certain percentage of left handed hitters hit that way because their dads taught them that way at an early age. It's possible that's why lefties, on average, look better than their right handed counterparts.

It's a good idea to teach a very young child to bat left handed. It's a very bad idea to try to force a child to throw left handed (against their natural desire).
