Ok, here's where I think this stuff gets too much thinking.
The guessing part as you say or, anticipation of the next pitch, given the specific situation at hand, occurs in regards to the type of pitch, not the height of the pitch. The pitch isn't recognized until it's about 2/3 of the way to the plate. That last 1/3, is where the batter makes their mind up to swing or not. They're pretty aware of the height of the pitch at THAT point and, that's where the front elbow is going to determine or, gauge, the height of the pitch and, how much tilt or, as you call it leg " L ", there will be.Obviously, the best hitters are able to adjust the best to the funky things the ball does before it reaches the catchers mitt.
Take a look at Dustin Pedroia sometime on you tube. He's a little guy that swings the way they were swinging back in the 20's; ROTATIONALLY.
