Question of Bat Velocity vs. Exit Velocity

Posted by: Brett Hraban (bwh24@drexel.edu) on Sun Apr 21 19:05:43 2002

My name is Brett Hraban. I am currently an pitcher for drexel university and I was hoping you could help me out with a problem that I have. I have been searching the web and have been unable as yet to find an answer to my problem. My pitching coach and I made a bet today. He was telling me that a certain player on our team has a bat velocity(how fast he swings the bat)of 101 mph. I told him there is no way. I said frankly that he was mistaken and that that would be the exit velocity of the ball off the bat. However, he says since the ball speed was measured from a stationary ball off of a tee, then the speed that the bat is swung at is the speed of the ball off the bat. If you swing at all ball on a tee with an aluminum bat, would not the exit velocity be greater the the speed at which the bat is swung. And unless I am mistaken isn't the avg. swing velocity for a college player around upper 80's or 90mph and would be unreasonable to be so high? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sincerely,

Brett Hraban
