7-yr old boy has batting problems

What could be the proper technique to teach a 7-yr old? I'm not having much success with what I am teaching. Any suggestions on what I should be doing or any helps?
We are getting some advice from a 13-yr old relative who is currently practicing under the supervision of a former pro. This guy is teaching him some new techniques that seem to be working for him, but then again, he is 13. Is our 7-yr old to young to comprehend these same techniques? They seem to be hurting him rather than helping. Any ideas?
