Your right, the hands must be behind the bat-head to hit the ball the other way. And there are times when it is important for the batter to hit behind the runner. But in most cases I see no advantage for a rotational hitter to hit the inside of ball over meeting it square or even pulling it. Top-hand-torque allows the batter to get the bat-head around sooner. So it is more a matter timing whether he hits the inside or outside of the ball. --- Barry Bonds uses tht on inside as well as outside pitches -- he hits the outside of the ball (pulled) the majority of the time.
