I believe it is more important to get the top hand elbow up than cock the bat forward. The cocking of the bat is an individual feature which may help certain players keep their hands and arms relaxed. Keeping the bathead moving may also eliminate the inital inertia rather than starting from a frozen static position. Similar to a forward press in the golf swing.
