stepping out of the box

My son is seven years old and playing coach pitch ball.He's played T ball 2 years prior and did well, but this year he's having problems staying in the box when batting.It's if he's afraid of the ball.I've tried putting the bat behind him when batting to no avail! What else can I do? Please help.
