Leaning backwards toward the catcher isn't necessarily bad. It's what many pros do.

Now, it can be a problem if the kid is taking a gigantic uppercut, but a slight uppercut is fine.

I would bet that there is another explanation for your son's problems, such as taking too big of a stride and sliding under the ball.
