Use the grip that's comfortable for you. Holding the bat at the base of the fingers is not a cookie cutter approach, it is a proven and successful way that most great hitters use. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but for the most part the bat can be made to feel comfortable by holding it the it at the base of the fingers. I would not teach a guy to hold the bat in their palms at any level! dog
