Tony-

I'll give you my 2c worth.Rotational is definitely the way to go if you understand how to do it and have the support of a knowledgeable coach. In fastpitch, pitchers dominate because of the big ball the short reaction time and mainly the disparity in coaching(many great pitching coaches, few even decent rotational hitting coaches and less need for multiple pitchers-only one or two needed for a team).Because of the nature of the fastpitch game, speed and ground balls and placement are worth a little more than in baseball, but this can be taught as a separate slapping/bunting style.Slapping is particularly of advantage in lefties.Given all this,I think you can make an argument for linear mechanucs, but I would still prefer rotational for most if you understand the distinction in styles and have access to good coaching.

Recently, there has been a change in rules that tilts the scales even more in favor of rotational and that is moving the pitching distance back to 43 ft for internatinal level play.It has been this way for some time in NCAA which is usually what kids should be shooting for anyway.Men's may be a different kettle of fish because reaction time is extremely limited.

Again the problem boils down to your understanding and the availability of coaching. This may be the hardest skill in sports.Kids have to work at it until the near impossible becomes automatic. If styles are not understood, the student will get conflicting advice and never get good results.Someone has to oversee what is being taught and track progress. This is not something the hitter is usually interested in and finding a coach you can trust is difficult.Usually "daddy" ends up being the make or break factor in managing the learning so kids don't get too far into bad habits that can be difficult to break. However,It's hard for daddy to be the coach and impossible for daddy to be the hitter.Good luck!
