Tom, a couple of points.

You may have to sacrifice a minute bit of batspeed in order to make contact at the optimal spot. Example: better to contact an outside pitch on the outside part of the ball and with a batspeed of 78 mph, and hit a line drive than to contact the middle part of the ball at 80 mph,and hit a ground ball.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this point. All I can tell you is that I think if anyone does my experiments described to Ray they will see that the lead arm does indeed run out of room sooner with a pull-type swing than it does with an inside-out swing.

I think it's amazing that people who think you should hit an inside pitch on the outside part of the ball do not agree that to hit the outside pitch you should hit the outside part of the ball. But extremism is not limited to rotationalists. The "linearists" agree that the outside pitch should be contacted on the inside part of the ball, but many of them also think you should contact the inside pitch on the inside part of the ball. The problem is that both sides think their swing is the perfect swing for all pitch locations, and this is not the case.
