"Stay inside the baseball"

Posted by: Coach Matthews/Grace Prep () on Thu Mar 1 21:21:31 2007

Here's a topic for you all. I had a Reds scout tell me last week that he doesn't like to use the term, "Stay inside the baseball". His reasoning was because it gives the hitter a since of feeling that he has to inside-out or feel for the baseball. Personally I think he has a good point. The term that I always used when I hit was "see or hit the inside part of the baseball." It seems to me that the term "stay inside" would hinder rotational hitters more than linear though.
And by looking at how he teaches his son, who plays in the minor league system, he seems to have a mixture of both swings.
Is this term mostly used with hitters who have a linear hand path?
