In the section of this website entitled "Mechanics that generate bat speed" it shows a hitter displaying the circular hand path. His top hand starts back toward the catcher? Huh? Shouldn't the swing be at a downward angle? The knob of the bat leads, right?

If you haven't been exposed to this stuff before it's all kind of strange and different isn't it. :) Keep reading, you'll be glad you did. I suggest, after reading the other sections, that you go back through the archives of the discussion board. Reading all of it would be daunting, but at least read anything posted by Tom Guerry or Jack Mankin.
