I have never denied that there ARE linear aspects to the swing. However, I don't think they are that consequential.

Also, in the Rose clip I think one of the things that exaggerates the linearity of the hand path is that Rose's body is still moving forward as he starts his swing. Watch the bright glint on the top of his helmet. The forward movement of his body in the first 1/3 of the clip will tend to distort the actual hand path and stretch it out so that it looks more linear than it actually is.
