Re: Bat Length & Weight

Hi Kevin,

The "Swing Speed Radar" sold on Jack's site comes with a little card of instructions, and it's advice (as I recall) is to swing with different bats in interlaced order and take the readings of your swings. Average the scores (speeds) for each bat. Then, basically pick the bat at the point at which your average speed for the bats just begins to drop.

I assume this drop off will look like some sort of "knee".

I would warn you though, that it's the length from your hands to the center of mass of the bat times the weight of the bat that you need to measure. As I recall from college, I think they called that the moment of inertia. In other words, you can actually swing a "heavier bat" faster than a "lighter bat" if the center of mass of the heavier bat is close enough to your hands.

Congrats on getting back in the game. I'm too old and am only concerned with others now - which is a good place to be too.
