Keith. With regard to the late swing, it might help to have your son choke up on the bat. Choking up is a potential immediate fix to the problem of a late swing. Also some hitters just decide to swing late relative to where they pick up the ball in making their initial move to swing. A couple of examples would be Wade Boggs, John Kruk, and Tony Gwynn. They were content to hit the ball to the opposite field. Tony Gwynn actually used a 30 1/2 ounce bat which is considered very light. Choking up helps a hitter make more solid contact.
