Could the mechanics he is using on the inside pitch be what is often described as "inside-outing"? In other words, trying to hit all pitches with the feeling of trying to drive them the other way but on the inside pitch what it does is square the bat to contact.

I believe this is what is meant by keeping the barrel inside the flight of the ball until just before contact. Accomplished by not allowing the hands to uncock too early.
