being fooled and adjusting

Posted by: RQL () on Sun Nov 4 16:20:20 2001

This ws I have seen many hits on pitches that fooled the hitter, usually off speed.I find this an important trait of good hitters.Example is tino's single up the middle in game six. Many times there is a break down of mechanics due to good pitching yet the good hitter sometimes still can make good contact by adjusting his whole motor program. The old saying he got fooled but kept his hands back is not quite accurate to me.In my opinion the hitter may get fooled but what happens is his axis gets shifted forward but he keeps the hips closed. He then rotates later but with poor axis,he cannot generate the power from the lost leverage of the lower body but still has enough to make solid contact with reasonable speed. No matter how hard he may try to rotate his shoulders he only can generate a portion of his normal power. This could be a point to argue why lower body rotation is important to bat speed.
