I actually disagree with the thought that stepping out is a bad idea. However, the batter MUST stand close enough to the plate to cover it with his/her bat. If the batter cannot cover the whole plate, he/she won't hit the ball. A good example of a good hitter who steps out is Mel Ott, another is Al Simmons.
