Yes, the extra length probably IS the difference. Pick up and swing a long-handeled shovel sometime. I'm not a physicist, but maybe it has something to do w/ "levers" and the longer ones being harder to move?

Unless he's a very large 10YO, I think 31" is too big. I just moved my 4'11" 100 lb 12YO up to 31 for this upcoming season.
