LEVEL SWING DEFINITION

The actually intent of the level swing was probably used to get the hitter not to uppercut. The uppercut was assumed to be the reason why the batter swings and missed. The thought was that the batter had to have the bat travel up through the strikezone in order to meet the ball which was coming supposedly straight. And what sold this philosophy to a degree is that most fastballs are missed by the hitter swinging under the ball. Therefore if a hitter swings the bat level to the ground the bat should make contact whether the swing is late, early, or on time assuming that the ball is coming straight. We know know that in most instances some sort of upswing is desired because the pitcher is pitch off a mound which puts him higher than the batter.
