Back Elbow of a 6 Year Old

Posted by: David R (richbygrace@aol.com) on Wed Jul 21 16:17:42 2010

I have a 6 year old who just finished 2 seasons in t-ball and will be moving up to machine pitch. As we have begun working on hitting a pitched ball, I took some video of his swing and noticed one thing in particular that I'm not sure how to fix.

He gets into an OK launch position, but as he begins to swing it is as if he is leading with his back elbow. As he rotates his torso, his back elbow reaches almost to his belly button and the bat lays back almost horizontal. It is as though he is "dragging" the bat through the zone. Bat weight seems to have little impact on his form, however. He manages to make fairly consistent contact, but lacks appropriate power for his skill level in my opinion.

How do I get a 6 year old to keep that back elbow back further and longer? Would appreciate any insight from anyone out there that works with young kids.
