>>> I use a batting stance like Edmonds, where i dont take a stride, i was wondering how far i should wind up, i remembered your post about George Brett wrapping his bat pointing toward the shortstop, i tried it and i couldn't get to the inside pitch, so how far is too far to wind up as in shoulders and hips in the inward turn. I hate whenever I get jammed cause my coach will be telling me i need to bend my lead arm and extend into the ball,it seems like whenever i have a bad at bat they will blame it on the lead arm, do u have any Advice Jack <<<

> The inward turn and how much the bat is cocked past a normal launch position are two separate matters. Most rotational batters counter rotate their shoulders about 20 degrees during the inward turn. But many batters cock their bat forward another 45+ degrees past the normal launch position. But I doubt that Brett, Bonds or any of those hitters could get around, even on an outside pitch, if they started shoulder rotation and launched their swing while the bat was still cocked forward. They all accelerate the bat-head back to about the same, or normal, location before they initiate the swing and shoulder rotation begins.

> I termed the mechanic of accelerating the bat-head back to the normal launch position as “pre-launch torque.” Only the hands and arms are used during pre-launch torque, shoulder rotation has not been initiated. – Look at the swing of Gary Sheffield. He has the bat pointing toward the pitcher when he starts applying pre-launch torque. It wouldn’t be a pretty sight if he started rotation with the bat in that position.

> Jeff, I recommend to most hitters that they do not cock their bat past their head. Few hitters know how to use pre-launch torque effectively. Most batters who exhibit a lot of cock in their bat bring it to a near stop at the launch position before initiating the swing. This action adds little or nothing to bat speed. For pre-launch torque to be effective, the bat-head must continue to accelerate from pre-launch through full launch.

So how much cock is too much and how much isn't?
